Sonifying Nature: A Talk with Sound Artist Skooby Laposky

Using plants and trees, sound artist Skooby Laposky gathers data that emerges from sounds found in nature, and with this data creates immersive artful experiences in collaboration with the natural world. Join us for an evening of exploration and conversation about this process. A sound designer and artist based in Cambridge, MA, and Hudson, NY, Laposky uses biodata sonification, acoustic ecology, and deep listening techniques to create real-time sound installations, musical recordings, and live performances based on the dynamics of ecosystems that are often hidden or unconsidered. Recent projects include the public art project Hidden Life Radio, which was broadcast in 2023 from its new location in New York’s Hudson Valley, and his ongoing, site-specific project, Palm Reading, with L.A.-based guitarist Charles Copley. His latest release, also created with Charles Copley, includes a collection of compositions recorded in Joshua Tree National Park, and upcoming releases include compositions recorded at oases in Palestine and Israel.
