New England Climbers
Native climbers in New England are surprisingly diverse, and include woody lianas, herbaceous vines, briars, and brambles that climb with the aid of twining stems and leaves, aerial roots, tendrils, thorns, and prickles. Learn to identify about 50 native species. These include many rare species, such as the Allegheny vine (Adlumia fungosa) and the American climbing fern (Lygodium palmatum), and those proliferating due to forest fragmentation and the warming climate, such as wild grapes (Vitis spp.) and poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans).
