The American Oaks: Diversity, Ecology, and Identification
Join Executive Director of The Polly Hill Arboretum Tim Boland for a lecture and tour of the PHA herbarium and living plant collections to understand the great diversity of oaks found throughout North America and locally in New England. Tim paints a picture of the genus Quercus, including its fascinating evolutionary history and challenges posed by climate change. Tim shows us how to identify most of the twelve species native to New England and offers guidance on species selection, installation, and maintenance for establishing oak trees in our managed landscapes. Tim will also share his work saving oaks from extinction as part of an international effort to conserve vulnerable oaks around the world.
Please note: We do not make video or audio recordings of classes or programs available after the fact, because we believe education is interactive, with instructors and students building a community and culture of learning. Some programs may be recorded strictly for instructor-training purposes. Please visit this page.
