Field Identification Techniques

This course will introduce you to the flora of New England as you study plants across a range of habitats and learn how to use field guides and plant identification keys. We will cover plant identification terminology, basic botany, and identifying features of major plant families commonly found in the region. You will be using the same techniques familiar to field botanists: observing plants in the wild, discerning important vegetative and floral characteristics, and using field guides and taxonomic keys to identify them. The objective is not to memorize a list of plants, but to learn a set of skills that will help you identify unknown plants you encounter in natural areas near you.
